This is just a brief post to let people know that I’m moving this newsletter over to Revue, the service Twitter just bought. This is largely due to the ongoing controversy over A) Substack semi-secretly paying some writers and B) the fact that they’re allowing various transphobes and so forth, including people who’ve already been banned elsewhere, a platform.
I don’t really have a problem with a newsletter service paying for “talent” to attract attention, and I am well aware that any service owned by Twitter is not going to be perfect. But the Substack leadership is not taking moderation seriously in the statements I’ve seen; they’re still in that California tech bro/ digital libertarian mindset that all platforms start from before they find themselves overwhelmed with bigots and trolls.
Revue will doubtless be a shitshow in some way or other, but at least Twitter has already given the boot to people like Alex Jones. It’s basically five years ahead of where Substack seems to be right now.
If you’re subscribed to Unsettling Futures now, you should – emphasis on SHOULD – get the next issue as normal through Revue. If you’re worried about it, or you aren’t subscribed and you want to get HOT TAKES on, hmmm, SF novels from the early 1990s, you can sign up here. It’s free and it always will be, unless I lose my day job and desperately need cash, in which case all bets are off.
