Absolutely agree that this is one of the most original fantasy books I've read. Beautiful prose, stunning structure. I did see it on display recently at my local Barnes & Noble, right in front on the New and Top Fiction shelf. And I'll be promoting it soon in a fantasy book giveaway in a few weeks, because more people should read it.
Just wanted to say this review has been lodged in my head since I read it, and so, since my fun money budget is refreshed with the start of a new month, I'm heading out to pick up this book today.
The Spear Cuts Through Water is the best book I've ever read in my entire life. I'm a person who has been reading over 100 books every year since I could read. I feel like my entire reading journey led me to this book. It was absolutely perfect. Jimenez wrote the ever-living h*ll out of every single page. The prose, the style, the SEAMLESSNESS. The best parts were those subtle moments, those "notes of grace," as you called them. The tension drove me insane and I have never been invested in two characters in my LIFE. Dear god, everyone needs to read this book. It's f*cking RELENTLESS.
Glad you checked it out! I've been on the Jimenez hype train since I read The Vanished Birds, and realized it simply didn't have much of a footprint in the usual corners of SFF (which I found criminal tbh). I think too many readers and fans depend on authors taking to social media to promote their works (with the usual crowd boosting - or not - said works), which kind of sucks for someone as good as Jimenez is out the gate. Hopefully, his sales are good enough that he can continue writing more amazing works because I'll be buying them as soon as I can, and urging everyone I know to do the same.
"The Spear Cuts Through Water" was one of my very favorite books of the year, so thank you for the recommendation. I also read "Void Star" in 2022, which is some of the best classic cyberpunk published this millennium.
This was my favorite book of 2022 and I had loved The Vanished Stars when it came out, as well. It deserves a much higher readership, for sure. I agree with everything you said here. https://spikegelato.com/2022/12/23/top-10-books-of-2022/

I do need to read this. I absolutely loved his last book.
Vanished Birds is on my TBR. Especially because I love a good weird space opera.
